Working for an outdoor equipment company puts you in contact with lots of people who enjoy the outdoors. One of those great and wonderful people, who I've had the chance to work with at Petzl, was Garrett Smith.
On Mar. 26, 2011 Garrett lost his life in an avalanche. As he and a group of friends were testing the snow conditions on top of a ridge before setting out for some back country skiing, a large chunk of snow on the cornice broke loose, which triggered an avalanche, and carried him and another co-worker down the mountain over 1,000 feet. The other guy was buried up to his knees and signaled that he was okay. Garrett was fully buried for 20 minutes before the others in the group could dig him out. He was not breathing and did not have a pulse. CPR efforts were performed and they were able to get him breathing again, but his injuries were too severe and he died later at the hospital.
On a positive note, Garrett is an organ donor, and several people will benefit from this accident.
